Shelly McCoy Grissom, PhD, is the Dean of Diversity, Inclusion and Retention at Mercy College of Ohio. Dr. McCoy Grissom is a lifelong Toledoan and has spent most of her professional career in higher education, primarily in Enrollment Management, Operations and teaching in Sociology. Under her leadership enrollment increased over 300% at Mercy College. After coordinating a $3 million dollar Science Laboratory expansion project, she’s been asked to develop a new role dedicated to promoting diversity and student success at both the Toledo and Youngstown campuses of Mercy College. She completed both her undergraduate and Master’s degrees from the University of Toledo and her doctoral degree is from Capella University. Her dissertation title is “An Examination of a Woman’s Life Work: Laura Smith Haviland and the Founding of the Raisin Institute” and focuses on the important role Haviland played in creating the first college in Michigan to admit students regardless of race, gender or creed as well as her involvement in the Underground Railroad.

Dr. McCoy Grissom has also studied, published and presented on a variety of topics including generations in the workplace, interpersonal communication and diversity issues. She has served the community serving on the Boards of Women Blessing Women, Prevent Blindness Ohio, and Penta Career Center. She is active with the Old West End Association and Mobile Meals. Shelly, her husband Otis, and their daughter Lily reside in the Historic District of the Old West End.
