The purpose of the Emerging Leadership Summit is to promote dialogue amongst college students and young professionals on topics that relate to diversity, inclusion, and leadership. Students and professionals will have the opportunity to hear from top Ohio business leaders, network with local companies, and gain valuable insight to takeaway and apply to their burgeoning careers.We’ll be bringing in top leadership representing companies from all over Ohio to talk about leadership development and practice to college students and emerging leaders.
Critical and reflective leaders examine options before expounding answers, ask questions before asserting solutions, and explore creative alternatives before exploiting personal influence. They are self-investigatory, seeking to know themselves as an avenue to better understand decision-making and minimize unconscious bias. These leaders do not take the first-offered way out, but are curious enough to consider multiple perspectives, and committed enough to pursue varied approaches. They are willing to admit shortcomings, explore inexperience, and pursue growth opportunities. They are authentic and transparent, and seek to practice empathy as a means to more informed leadership.
Aspirational and transformational leaders are willing to speak up and stand out, if doing so will result in the growth, development or security of those they lead. These leaders see the results before the work is done, and lead from a place of positivity and surety. They do not dwell in past failure, but use challenging situations as platforms from which to design better, more comprehensive solutions. They see themselves as change agents within their peer-groups, and work to affect positive change across industries, not simply within their own teams. These leaders work to change the status quo and build cultures, not companies. They don’t wait for titles or offices, but lead from the places they are, utilizing peer influence and passion to gain trust and garner support.
Empowered and intentional leaders know that their team’s unique sets of experiences are actually competitive advantages, not barriers to be overcome. They grasp their identities and own them, and seek ways in which to celebrate the identities of their peers, catalyzing them toward greater growth. They develops appropriate goals with their teams, and constantly redefine those goals as new challenges arise. These leaders understand the value of strategy and reflection, and resists the temptation of reactionary decision-making. They create achievable short-, mid- and long-term aims, so that teams can experience success and anticipation along every step of the journey.
Versatile and reflexive leaders are adaptive and flexible. They understand that change is often the most constant reality, and seeks constantly to have a finger on the pulse of their organization, people and processes. These leaders are innovative, never relying on yesterday’s solutions for today’s challenges. They work hard, and smart. They seek to expand their education, experiences and expertise. These leaders adjust the trajectory of their teams and recalibrate their goals to remain both true to their future vision and responsive to the current needs.
Creative and engaged leaders take authentic learning and turn it into meaningful application. They are not sages of theory, but hands-on servant leaders. These leaders work hard to position themselves at the intersections of diverse peoples, ideas and solutions. They offer real-time support. They don’t wait to be asked when needed, but seek to sense when those around them need their involvement. These leaders don’t confuse busyness for productivity, but monitor activity with measured discretion in regards to actual productivity. They always seek the best-practice solutions of yesterday combined with the ingenuity and forward-thinking of their newest generation of thinkers. They are not afraid of getting their hands messy in the process of finding better answers and creating better people.
