For this day long conference, we’re bringing in recognized and expert voices from across Ohio to talk about effective veteran recruitment and retention. We aim to assist companies and organizations across Ohio in creating and sustaining clear workforce development initiatives by better understanding and engagement of the veteran workforce. The day will consist of a comprehensive exploration of the veteran community within Ohio; the skill-sets and talent-pools it represents and the challenges associated with post-service life for veterans. Attendees will leave with veteran-specific recruiting and retention information and resources.
It’s important to know something of the community with which you are trying to engage. Ohio’s veteran population is the 6th largest in the nation, and arguably the most diverse workforce in the state. What else must we know in order to effectively engage with this body of nearly 900,000 men and women?
Our veteran community is one that has gone without ease and personal freedom in order to protect and and ensure our own. This has not come without sacrifice. Like every contact sport and high-stress position, a career in the military can leave a lasting mark on a veteran. Understanding those risk factors is key to working with this group, both in order to guarantee their health and wellness, and in order to effectively engage this workforce over the long-term.
Ohio is home to approximately 850,000 veterans. How do potential employers find this workforce? Additionally, many veterans enter the job search with a host of hirable attributes and transferable skills, but not every recruiter and HR department knows how to understand or see those skills in a corporate context. Organizations need to strategically equip their hiring teams to navigate veteran hiring pools and identify strong candidates through training and awareness. What does this training and awareness look like?
Recruitment is one thing; retention is another. Building a corporate culture that supports the continued integration and advancement of veterans toward key business goals is fundamental to engaging the veteran workforce. Beyond social clubs and media shout-outs, how do our organizations become employers of choice for a workforce that understands loyalty, collaboration, and goal-getting?
